Every spring, the Filipino Cultural Association (FCA) of the University of Maryland, College Park hosts its Philippine Culture Night--a celebration and showcase of Filipino culture through cultural and modern dancing, singing, an original play, and a traditional Filipino dinner.
Last year, the Filipino Cultural Association (FCA) in alliance with the School of Undergraduate Studies and the Asian American Studies Department at the University of Maryland, College Park along with members of the local Filipino American community embarked on a journey to establish a Filipino American Studies Program at the University of Maryland; the first in the mid-Atlantic region.
On the evening of Saturday, April 12, 2008, FCA will be hosting their annual Philippine Culture Night featuring an awards ceremony recognizing the accomplishments made in the establishment of Filipino American Studies and honoring local influential Filipino Americans. In honor of their contributions to the Filipino American campus and local communities, FCA will be awarding Mencie Hairston, a founder of Mabuhay Inc., Jonathan Glorioso Sterlin, and Ryan Herrera, 2006-2007 President and Vice President, respectively. The first two awardees of the Filipino American Studies Scholarship will also be announced. The night will be comprised of a traditional Filipino dinner along with the awards ceremony, cultural and modern dances, and musical and theatrical entertainment. It will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Adele H. Stamp Student Union at the University of Maryland.

The purpose of this event is to introduce the inauguration of Filipino American
Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. We want the audience to be
actively involved in this historic milestone:
Filipino American Studies in the nation's
capitol.
That evening, we will celebrate the achievements of two remarkable Filipino
Americans in the DC metropolitan area, Vangie Paredes and Christina Lagdameo. Ms.
Paredes was a young lady when she was in Washington, DC in the 1940s, working
with the exile government of President Quezon, and Ms. Lagdameo was responsible
for pressuring the administration to establish the first Asian American Studies
Program in the DC metropolitan area.
